This blog post is written late on the evening in which the English football team lost to Spain in the final of the European Championship. The title ‘Gareth the Great’ unsurprisingly refers to England Manager Gareth Southgate, a remarkable man who has made his England men’s team arguably almost as successful as the women’s side under Sarina Wiegman.

The England men’s football team Managers job is tremendously challenging and exposing. Sky high expectations, an army of media and armchair often experts ready to criticise in the most frank of terms, and being up against numerous teams equipped with more or less equally elite footballers. To render the England men’s team as competitive as it is and consistently so is a great achievement, as is coming within a whisper of winning two or more tournaments.

Hats off to Gareth the Great and the best of fortune to him whatever he does next, in the England hot seat or not.

We talk about positivity a lot in our blog posts, social media, at events, in person at events, and in media – In Tune PR Founder Darren Weale was on BBC Radio London twice in the last few days commenting on news stories. So, after that positive reflection on Gareth Southgate and his achievements, here we go again.

Two media channels have been worth reflecting on in the last two days. First, our favourite magazine, Positive News, has launched its own podcast. ‘The Positive News Podcast‘ has started with reflections on mental health and wellbeing initiatives worldwide, and is as welcome an arrival in the media scene as the magazine itself.

The second channel has been around longer. At the end of May, Jameela Jamil’s I Weigh podcast released an episode in which she interviewed Simon Sinek, the author of the landmark book ‘Start With Why’. Spotify link here. This was an especially memorable episode, one in which the interviewer became interviewee as Simon probed Jameela’s own wellspring of Why, insightfully. This found an echo with us, as our Founder Darren was enabled while listening to connect with his own Why more clearly than previously. Jameela’s is about tackling loneliness; Darren’s about bringing people together, as generally, when people are brought together, good things can happen.

So, that is it for a philosophical few days, and in our opinion, if Gareth Southgate’s Why is around making his country proud, he has done that.
